The Importance Of Sharing Your Business Story

In recent weeks, several business owners have said to me they don’t feel comfortable sharing their business story.

I think it stems from reading content on social media about how you shouldn’t talk about yourself, your content should be about the benefits to your customers/clients/suppliers and not about you.

Personally, I disagree

Yes, of course, talk about the benefits of why someone might want to buy/collaborate with you but don’t be scared to share your story.

I believe that sharing your business story helps to create a connection with your audience and it is an invaluable part of your marketing. If it helps, think of it as brand storytelling.

Let’s be clear, I don’t mean talking about what you had for lunch today, yes, it might resonate with people but unless your lunch is part of your business, it might make for a fun social media post but it’s not part of your brand.

There are lots of different ways to share your brand story. Here are 3 quick suggestions.

Why did you start your business?

  • Were you made redundant?
  • Did your business derive from a hobby?
  • Did you want to challenge yourself with something new?
  • Did you spot a gap in the market?

Who are you?

  • What’s your background?
  • Do you work alone or do you have a team?
  • What are your values?
  • What’s important to you, for example, are you passionate about using sustainable products and is that where the business idea stems from?

What have you learned?

  • Has your business evolved?
  • Is this your first business or are you an entrepreneur?
  • What lessons have you learnt, the good, the bad and the ugly?

Sharing your brand story leads to creating an emotional connection because it is relatable, but it needs to be meaningful. Don’t make up a story because you think people will ‘like it’, it needs to be ‘real’, so keep it simple.

Think about how you articulate your story, it shouldn’t come across as salesy. Instead, consider your tone of voice and your communication style. How do you want to be perceived? Formal, professional, friendly, authoritative?

On social media, my approach is to come across as professional but friendly, with a dash of my personality.

What’s your approach and what can you share as part of your brand story?
